There isn't a difference really. Just sounds better than saying boyfriend/girlfriend - especially when you've been together a long time & just haven't gotten married yet but plan to. Bf/gf just kinda sounds juvenile.

your boyfriend/girlfriend is considered as your significant other I'd say as long as it's not a bad stupid abusive or immature relationship. like if you are actually serious about each other. that is just my opinion though. it can vary for others

The distinction comes from preference. I call my significant other that because I do not like the terms bf/gf. They feel immature and lack the significance we feel in our relationship. We also will never get married and I'm not going to call him my bf for the rest of my life. It's just our preference in terminology:)

Significant other and bf/gf are the same thing. Completely interchangeable. Before I got married and even now I still will use significant other. It's a personal preference thing. Some same sex relationships will use it as well just so they don't have to disclose their sexual preference before they're ready as well. That's what my best friend did with her family and other friends until she was ready to tell them.

When boyfriend/girlfriend seems like it doesn't accurately describe your relationship. I call my fiancé my so, because we share a home we own, we're having a child, and we've been together for 7 1/2 years... so saying boyfriend doesn't really feel right- it sounds like something not as serious.
