Changing ideas of democracy in 19th century?

I have an assignment due in English class and I thought some of you could help since you understand this better than I do.

So basically, I have to take the poem 'The Martyr' (a poem written in tribute to Abraham Lincoln) and the historical text 'Ain't I a Woman' (basically Sojourner Truth calling out double standards between white women and black women in the 19th century) and talk about how these represent the changing popular idea of democracy in the 19th century.

Since I'm not a WOC, I wanted to get some other opinions on it since I won't have any experience or as much knowledge on the subject as some of you! Thanks in advance!
