Was she wrong for leaving her kids in the car? (Read description)
Long story short:
An officer at my job humiliated this woman who was in my line after calling her out for leaving her 6 kids in the car unattended while she grocery shopped (I say humiliated not because it was intentional on his part but because he was making NO effort to keep his voice down, everyone was listening and she was obviously embarrassed).
He was telling her that it was reckless and negligent to leave 6 young kids in a car unattended.
She was trying to explain to him that she has no one to help her and one of the kids is handicap which makes it hard for them to walk which makes grocery shopping with all of them in the store hard (on top of having to keep an eye on all of them). She seemed to feel that because the windows were down, the doors were locked and they were with each other they were safe.
He however was unconvinced and told her that regardless of the situation leaving your kids in the car is dangerous & uncalled for. He also told her that if she was worried about not being able to watch them she should have brought them in and had one of the officers in the store watch them instead of leaving them outside.
What are your thoughts/opinions on this situation? Was she wrong for leaving her kids out in the car or is it understandable?
