Is it wrong to use dogs to apprehend suspects?

Side note: this is strictly about using police dogs to apprehend suspects, I don't think anyone would argue that having a drug sniffing dog is inherently wrong. ***

So I saw this post on Twitter and reading some of the replies got me thinking: is it wrong to use animals in order to "reinforce" the law?

Some people seemed to feel that constantly putting affectionate, loyal and people orientated animals in a situation where they have to be aggressive and viscous is wrong. They also argued that risking the animals life & subjecting it to a high stress environment to push the agenda of people on a daily basis is cruel.

However, many other people seemed to feel that it was in a dogs nature to please and that the dog was bonded with the officer using them therefore it was still able to be affectionate and people orientated as it is by nature.

They also brought up the similarity between training a police dog & average everyday people training their dogs to guard their house and attack on command. Plus the fact that often times the police dogs make it safer for actual police officers to approach a suspect.

What are your thoughts? Is it wrong to use dogs to apprehend suspects? Is it wrong towards the dog only or the person getting bit by it as well?
