Are tattoos/piercings considered unprofessional in a work environment?

I’m 16 and I have a little cat tattoo on my wrist. I’ve had people say “you’re not gonna get a proper job” or “you should cover it up in a job interview.” I just want to know if it’s considered unprofessional.

It depends on the place and their policies. Cover it up just incase, and when you get the job they'll go over their policies with you.

it depends on the job. yes, you will likely have difficulty with certain jobs, I won't lie. like, if you interview somewhere very professional and uptight, like a law firm,you'll need to wear long sleeves. piercings... ears are ok. a ton on your ears and you'll need to tone it down. nose is maybe. others will be an issue in professional circumstances.

Chef out in the back? Full sleeves are a-ok.
Front of house and greeting customers? Probably not so much unless it's a super edgy place that thrives on that culture.

My mom has several tattoos but she has them in places that are covered up because she works closely with other businesses i had several teachers in hs that had tattoos but they all had to cover them up but every once in a while the teachers would show them off but not every often like once a semester

I work at a daycare as a teacher & out of the 20 or so people who work there, there is ONE person without a tattoo & that’s because she’s only 17. My boss is covered in them & everyone’s fav person there has 2 full color sleeves.

I'm an accountant in the U.K. and deal directly with clients who are other large multi national companies. 
I have my tongue pierced and a tattoo on my wrist.
Sometimes when interviewing I have taken my piercing out and covered my tattoo but have always had them on show when actually doing a job! 
Honestly it really depends on the company, many don't have an issue with it but others may look down on it. It can also be as much about the personal opinions of the person who is interviewing.

I have a bunch of piercings (nose, septum, forward helix) plus a half sleeve and a visible tattoo on my wrist. I used to work front end reception and I had to cover up.  no one cares about the piercings. now I'm going into the back (customer service) and one girl back there has blue hair and another has a bunch of visible forearm tattoos. however, my job is an exception and not the rule. I personally think the bias against modified people in the workplace is stupid af, but change happens slowly. just remember that if you decide to get visible piercings or tattoos.

Our teachers are allowed to show off their tattoos freely ... Students in school have tattoos too and don't have to cover it up at school or at their part time jobs...
I even know of a doctor who has his entire arms tattooed and doesn't have to cover up on the job..
I personally think society is just being stereotypical once again

I have a full sleeve and sell tuxs to business people. I fit them and everything. It's not unprofessional.
