Complaint about the music-Canadians can be racist too

Annie

So i was in the mall today with a friend and we went into the dollar store. There was some Hindustani type music playing over the sound system that neither of us really noticed. That is until an announcement was made over the PA system (to whoever was in the back I assume) saying, “there is a complaint about the music.” Then the music stopped and some easy listening music came on. My friend and I looked towards the cash area and saw an approx 60 year old white woman look around satisfactorily, grab her bag and leave the store. We both looked at each other. My friend said, “if she was leaving the store anyway why does it bother her what music is playing?” I shrugged my shoulders. As we are checking out I said to the middle aged, white cashier, “don’t stop the music on our account. We don’t care what music is playing.” She shrugged and responded with, “some of the older people don’t like the different music.” We paid and left.

Looking back on the moment later I am so upset about the whole situation. There wasn’t anything wrong with the music that was playing before. There were no heavy beats, no swear words. It was simply different. I wish I had spoken up to the lady that had a problem with it. I understand that I don’t know why she complained about the music, but in all likelihood, it was because she unfortunately connects the type of music with a type of thought about a certain culture. I wish the cashier had stood up for their coworker that chose that music for the day.

I won’t stand for prejudice in my own country.

I missed an opportunity to educate someone today. I am so sorry to that person that may feel terrible at home today because of their taste in music.
