Medical coding?

Question

Could someone tell me what this is? And how to do it? I want to work from home. I don't want to be on the phone all the time with people while my baby is crying in the background. I heard you have to take a few classes. And how would you apply for it?

I'm a medical coder. I work from home. I got hired right away but.... here is the thing. MOST places want experience.  You need more than just the few months and classes to get a job. I hope the degree for health information technology... it's a real degree not just a certificate. I then got certified. BUT...I also worked in medical records for 6 years before... because of my medical experience and my education and certification...I got the job 1 month after being certified. 
Many people aren't this lucky bc many employers want experience. My employer works with the local college and hires coders from that program bc they also let us intern at the hospital I already worked for through the school.
My teachers also wrote letters of recommendation to my employer. unlike many commercials... medical coding is actually very important and if you make mistakes or break the law you can get fired or lose your certification. 
it is a very nice job though. I don't ever so phone calls except twice a month meetings. I get paid decent, I don't post what I make online though, sorry. I get good benefits bc I work for a hospital directly. 
but if you are serious about it, get the degree first, then the certification. it looks better on job applications than just a certification course. many people Fall into that trap unfortunately... and I've been told by hiring managers at other places that they are really looking for a degree... certification and some experience in any medical facility. 
perks about the job at my family are: I chose my hours I work... but they must know them in advance, I'm full time bc that's what I wanted. I work from home. I get pto. I only had to go in for immediate training. all my other training was online. I've literally never met my manager. LOL
down side: well you have to know how to communicate with doctors and nurses via email or phone, depending on who you work for. I don't do phone calls bc I wear a hearing aid and it's better to have proof of anything nurses and drs say to you anyways, backing up emails lol. I do work some holidays bc hospitals are open all the time. if I'm sick or my kid is sick I tend to not call off bc I'm at home anyways unless I'm actively vomiting , I will TRY TO WORK. 
sorry it's a long comment but I feel just recently going through all the schooling. getting the job and being in the field over a year now, I might be able to give you insight. no one gave me any before I went to school. but it was worth it. I went while I was a mother of one. decided to not have any more kids until I got this job and now I have a baby on the way.
for anyone that has a different coding story and disagrees with me, that's fine. I'm just hearing about how hard it is to get a job lately when MANY of my classmates found jobs with in 6 months of getting their certifications. also certifications and tests and books are NOT cheap. I have books worth hundreds of dollars for coding. my tests cost a few hundred each. but in the long run it was worth it for me. that's my story. sorry I'm typing it in my phone so if I made any typos forgive me 🤣😂
I hope things work out for you. my friend just did the certification program, not the college degree.... and she said she doesn't like coding and feels it's too hard. also why I feel the degree is worth more. but that's just my opinion. I know others will differ. and that's fine.

I went to school for medical billing and coding .. it was a certificate program with an exam at the end. It took about 18 months. I did really well in school but couldn’t find a job after I graduated. Every where I applied said that I didn’t have enough experience. Part of the program was an internship which I completed and I ended up getting hired there (it was at an urgent care .. very little billing/coding but it was the only site in my area with night time hours). At the time I couldn’t afford to do another internship with working full time and having a baby. I ended up being trained in medical assisting and love it!

good luck. I took medical coding as part of my associates and am a certified CPC and still can't find work. That was back in May. Everyone wants coders but no one wants them without 5+ years experience. I live in a huge medical city and STILL can't get hired as a coder. You might as well find something else cause you're not likely to ever get hired.  (I'm a litter bitter. I put in so much time and money and can't find fucking work)

I'm actually in school right now for this. Medical Billing & Coding Cert. Program. I Have experience already from my previous job in NY but I'm currently in Fayetteville, NC so I meed to be certified. it's between 15 and 18 mnths and it's hybrid for me. have to go to school 1 or 2 days a week and the rest of the work is online. towards the end I have to do a 10 week externship as well.

Devry has on online billing class, you could start there and work toward coding. Coding is putting codes on medical procedures and visits. Billing will get you on the path to coding.
