Can breastfeeding stop a period?

I know that exclusively breastfeeding can stop a period from coming on but can breastfeeding stop a period that has already started? Been having cramps for about a week and been very nauseous and throwing up for two weeks. Thought I had a bug or my period was starting after about 9 weeks PP. Then I felt a few stronger cramps and had some dark brown blood (not enough to fill a liner) and then it tapered off into nothing by 5:00 PM and the cramping stopped. It never got red or heavy. Could me breastfeeding today stopped the full flow? Or maybe breakthrough bleeding? Anyone experience anything like this?
