That totally depends on your situation-- your insurance, your maternity leave, your lifestyle. My husband and I are in nooooo way zero debt (ha!) but we have always contributed to a savings account and try to make responsible choices. When we had our first we went from eating out constantly, going to bars and traveling to doing literally nothing so our finances kinda balanced themselves. But here's my advice- if you wait for the perfect time to have kids, you'll never have them.

First we did the zero consumer debt. That took me about two years to clean up my husbands reckless spending from before we met (growl). We started trying once we had 10k and then did 1500 per month (what we figured would be the cost of the kid per month) into savings once we started trying and each month of pregnancy. We don't live insanely extravagant lifestyles but we have a nice mortgage and heaven forbid one of us lost our jobs I don't know if I'd find one with the same income. Want to make sure we have that safety net. We also have our 401ks as emergencies and a few other investments and a rental property we could sell for profit if need be, but that bitch is going to pay off my hibbys insane student loan in about a decade. Don't go to private school, kids lol

I keep around $5,000-$10,000 in my savings at all times and I'm not even TTC. Anything can happen at any time where you need that extra money. Kids are expensiveeee. I wouldn't be comfortable having no money saved up.

Including 401k that I can draw from? Over $50k my medical deductible was $2000 plus a good $3000 to get everything we needed for our son. Your numbers seem low for what would be a good amount. But working in banking I can tell you most people don't even have $1000
