When to buy baby stuff

Question

So my SO wants to wait until our baby shower to buy anything for the baby, we're talking crib, stroller, clothes, diapers, bouncers, etc. Literally doesn't want to buy anything right now. We're due March 11 and having our shower end of January. 
I'm a BIG plan ahead person, so I want to buy stuff starting now. I want to get the nursery ready (which is the other half of our bedroom). We've gotten our registry at least half done if not more. It'll also be a really nice thing to keep me busy to decorate and get the furniture in here, etc. 
I agree with him that we could get tons of stuff we need from the shower, that we should wait to see if we get gift cards and all that jazz. But it makes me nervous AND baby stuff is so fun! I wanna set it up!
When did you're families start buying? Did you wait until 7-8 months for the baby shower or start right away?

We’ve already got crib, car seat/stroller, started on nursery, etc. I’m a big planner too and it would cause way too much stress to wait for last couple of months!

My husband and I are due March 29th. We've started buying diapers and wipes and have a theme for the nursery picked out. We will not be having a baby shower, just a private registry for those who ask. We will start on our nursery next month. We are huge planners as well so this all made sense to us.

I don't anticipate anyone will give us a crib or anything like that so the plan is to buy big things and wait to buy clothes, bottles etc because that's what person's normally gift at baby showers.

I would suggest getting the crib and decor, usually people don’t buy those things for you and that will keep you busy until your shower!

We already buying stuff. I can't deal to wait till after my shower to buy anything 😩 it would drive me crazy to only have a few months to plan.

Oh we have bought SO much! Almost all of it, besides a few super cute outfits we found online or out shopping, has been from yard sales or consignment. I can’t afford paying full price for all the crap I want or even just the crap I need. I can’t pay $10+ for all her clothes, instead I pay $0.15 - $0.25 at yard sales.

With my first, I waited kind of late I felt to get things. But I did receive a lot at my baby shower, and my mom purchased us a pack n play and swing and high chair after our daughter was born. 
We got everything just fine, but I would’ve liked to have had more time to review products and really feel like I had everything I need. 
This time, I don’t want to be buying everything at once. I don’t want to have the baby shower and then have to go buy everything. 
I mean, is it likely that someone will be buying you a crib? That I got on my own, and the mattress, way before the shower. 
It’s hard to say what you’ll get, so I can see why he wants to wait, but I also didn’t feel like shopping for a bunch of crap that far into my pregnancy :/ it wasn’t fun to get the things I still had to when I had to pee every 20minutes lol
We’ve registered for a lot, and we’re picking through Little by Little ourselves. I honestly am just planning for us to buy everything ourselves, and if people gift things to us from there then bonus 🤷🏼‍♀️
It’s been 5 years since I’ve been pregnant so we’re starting over a lot with what we need, and we know better since we’ve gone through it once before what things are more needed.

we bought our crib and big stuff before but didn't go crazy with toys/activity stuff or clothes until after with our son. ended up going perfect and we didn't have anything double

We already started setting up nursery and buying things. I feel like there’s a million things we need so we’ll still have plenty on our registry, I’ve just been picking away at my favorite items.

I’m like you. As soon as we found out the gender I wanted to buy and plan. We just found out we’re having another boy so I don’t need to buy as much right away but did start a registry and started to look at baby furniture. You will get a ton of stuff for your shower and it’s a lot to sort through and some stuff you’ll get doubles of and have to return. Items you are planning on buying yourself you can buy now. We bought our son’s crib, rocker, and other furniture. I’d tell him to think about how overwhelmed you’ll be.
