Was I Right to steal him? Long
So by my husbands workplace is a small set of four apartments. He and a couple of coworkers watched this dog tied to a 2 foot chain with a collar cutting into him get kicked by his owner before being thrown a handful of catfood and left alone. It had no shelter no water and it was raining at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. My husband called me and asked what to do. I immediately drove over. He is a red nosed pitty and immediately cries and jumps for me to hold him. I call AC and they said they are full and since he was a pitbull that he would be put down immediately. We had reported two dogs before at the same residence in the same conditions without knowing this and now my heart is broken. Without a moments notice I stole him. I wasn't about to leave him there like that. My husband have him water and the workplace cheered. I have a vets appointment tomorrow so we can assess his wounds and get his vaccinations. His balls are deformed and twisted like they've been twisted and tied up. He has a horrible rash like someone kicked his underbelly and legs with cleats. He has swollen bleeding paws that hurt him to walk and he cowers at any man and a loud voice. Other than some rather intimidating barking at men and guests he is a good boy. When he first got here he had an accident because my dog was going insane in her crate and scared him. He immediately panicked and tried to lick it up. I bent down to clean it and tell him it was okay and he screamed bloody murder cowering. It's obvious he had been abused and neglected. He has fleas and is a bit underweight. We did all the aggression tests and he passed with flying colors. Now I notified my landlord and she fell in love with him and asked me to keep him here for now. So I guess we have a new dog which I'm happy about but today the person who lived there posted about how her dog got stolen on facebook in the lost and found section. We perused her facebook and there wasn't a single photo of the dog but she did have photos of a bunch of half starved lap dogs that she was holding and there were a bunch of pitbulls in pins in the background. I have a sickening feeling that she runs a dog fighting ring. She seemed genuinely concerned for him though. He isn't small animal aggressive or dog aggressive he is just terrified of men. He won't let my husband near me at first. Now after all of this I still feel super guilty about stealing him. I don't know if I was right to do so. I didn't know what else to do though. No matter what I am getting him medical treatment and nursing him back to health but should I return him after? Should I re home him? Was i wrong? Please tell me what you think. Sorry for the long post. Thank you.
