Right or wrong? New law passed in America

Found on Unilad, whether it is a viable source or not I think it’s a good debate topic even if hypothetical. 
✨✨Should parents be fined and possibly face a jail sentence if their children are bullies? ✨✨
“Parents of bullies could potentially face a fine of $250 (£188) and a 15 day jail sentence under a new law in America” 
“The new law, which is being pushed in the State of New York, also aims to punish parents if their child violates city curfews or breaks the law twice within a 90 day period”

As someone who was bullied severely for 10 years, where I do believe the parents should have to step up in some way, more so if their child has a history of this.

The kid should be sent to jail. You wanna act like a big dog, then try to run with the big dogs.

In my case, had I been able to jail them, I would have, I settled for restraining orders that pretty much ruin any chance of having good paying employment. Not many people are willing to hire people who have restraining orders for assult, harassment and cyber stalking.

I can raise my child to be a perfect person but they are their own person and if they want to be an asshole, I can’t stop it. I can do every punishment their is, I can talk to them, control them, etc. but at the end of the day, an asshole is an asshole. Lol. But it depends on the age. Middle school and younger I think it’s the parents job but once high school hits, teens are in their own self centered world and don’t care about their parents.

It's wrong, many bullies are the victim somewhere else in their life. Parents and teachers need to work together to find out where and how to help. I would prefer the child gets mandatory therapy, not a fine for the parents.

Hypothetically, ❌. I think it's the job of parents to teach their kids to be kind, but who would collect the fine? The government? I'd prefer for there to be free parenting classes for parents of school aged kids to teach them some strategies to deal with bullying, both from the bullying side and bullied.

Hmm I'm a bit stuck on answering this. The pros of the law would be that children might be less likely to bully if they know their parents will get into trouble, and parents are more likely to teach their children not to bully and do something about it if they find out. But there are some children that will bully regardless and it's unfair on the parents if the parents really have tried their best to prevent it.

I don't think parents should be put in jail for their kid bullying. 
Not every kid learns bad behavior from their parents. They may learn it from their peers, from media, or maybe they have an underlying mental issue that needs to be treated professionally (like ODD). Instead of punishing parents, there should be services easily available for the kid and/or their family to find out the cause and work on treatment or correcting that behavior.

I think it’s wrong to punish the parents only because if there’s a problem at home making the kid act out, then adding punishment could backfire and make life hell for the kid. I do think parents have a large role in how a child acts but I think therapy is the way to go.

A restorative justice approach should be taken between bully and bullied. Parents should be mandatory participants in this restorative justice in order to facilitate the continuance of positive behaviour.
