How do you decide to give your baby medication for suspected pain?

I don't like giving my 9 month old son medication unless it's absolutely necessary... sometimes we think he's teething and maybe he's in pain from teething, but how do I know? When my son has pain from gas, I usually know because he arches his back or obviously, I hear him pass gas.. but how do I know he is in pain from teething?

A good sign of teething pain is grabbing around their ears. If I see that and my baby is being fussy and grumpy for no other reason I usually give him a bit of Tylenol and he starts acting better pretty quick. I try distraction and teething toys first but those seem to provide such short-lived relief for my baby.

my son's cheeks turn red, he is super fussy and can't focus on playing with things I know he loves. he also chews on everything.

My son will tug at his ear, put his thumb on his gums to rub, and his cry will be a higher pitch and be inconsolable.

my daughter bites on her hands or bites really hard on a toy n grinds her gums on toys when it's her gums I never give full dose of the meds just usually half enough to make it manageable for her
