Society & Gender
I read a post yesterday where someone was annoyed by her mother in law when her son picked up a Barbie instead of a “boy toy.” I was thinking about that today and realized something. Society tells us, esp children, that girls and boys are to pick certain types of toys. I went to McDonald’s today and ordered two happy meals; one for my son and another for my daughter. She asked me “boy or girl” for the toy. I mean, think about it, when we go to Target, we see a girls lane for pink toys and a boys lane with black and blue toys. We are showing our kids what is considered for boys and what is considered for girls. Same thing with clothes, one side we have blues, greens, and browns. Other side is pink, white, and purple. The list goes on with shoes, birthday party themes, gifts, backpacks etc.. We’re programmed to think a certain way. Don’t you think we need change these “categories” and “standards”? What do you think?
