Can I just vent?

Katy

1. I’m a fraternal twin and I have a twin sister. My mom had fertility help which resulted in her having fraternal twins. Twins do not run in our family.

2. All twin types can be born from fertility help. (There are at least 7 types of twins!)

3. If twins run in your family, they can only be fraternal. Identical twins are not genetic, but are spontaneous. They just happen to some women. Usually women over 30.

4. My husband and I have similar features. I have red hair and he has brown hair. For some reason people also think he’s a redhead but he is 100% not a redhead. What throws people off is that he has a lot of reddish hair in his beard. Which is so common in men! But people always call us both, “ginger.” Which I find insulting and unoriginal.

So I know people are just trying to make conversation and they mean no harm, but I hate the following comments:

1. “Omg! You’re going to have ginger babies.” — actually, probably not. Also, don’t use the word ginger to describe their potential physical features. Or my features, for that matter. It’s derogatory and rude.

2. No. I’m not having twins because I am a twin. I’m a fraternal twin and they’re identical. Identical twins are not genetic.

3. Stop talking about which one will be evil. That’s annoying. They’re not even born yet and you’re wanting to discuss their personalities? No need to stigmatize them or impose your expectations on them.

That is all. I’m only 13 wks and we’ve only told about 20 people; close friends and family. But so many people say such stupid and annoying stuff to me. Just because my husband and I have fair skin and light eyes doesn’t mean anything - and if we were any other color it’d be insanely rude to talk about that. “oh, you’re both (fill in the blank with physical descriptors) - they’ll look like you.” Yeah, no shit they’ll look like us. Thanks for the astute observation, genius.
