Surgery for TTC?

Question

I am currently at least 200 pounds over what I should be. I have been off of birth control for 2 years and have been hardcore TTC for about 9 months (ovulation kits, pre seed, etc.) I have been overweight all of my life and when I was in fourth grade was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, so I have been taking metformin and synthroid for a long time (I'm 28). Weight loss surgery has been at the back of my mind for a while now. My question is should I get the gastric sleeve and then have to wait TTC for 2 years for a better chance to conceive or keep TTC with the chance of not conceiving due to my weight? The 2 years might kill me because husband and I are really wanting a little one, but would it be the better choice? I would ideally have liked to had kids before I'm 30. Any advice?

I did the sleeve in 2014 and lost 100+ pounds and my husband and I just found out today we are expecting it took 5 months once we started trying. I had a good experience with the sleeve surgery and wouldn’t change a thing

I really considered doing this, but ultimately couldn’t stand the thought of having to stop trying for that long! Plus, I did a lot of internet research and scared myself reading all the horror stories of what could happen...
   We’ve been ttc for 4 years, seeing a specialist for 18 months now. When we first started seeing the specialist I was probably 170 lbs over my “ideal” weight. My dr said losing even 10% of my body weight would make a big difference. I didn’t really take it seriously because I know many overweight women who have conceived with no issues. Well, after a year, several different fertility treatments, and thinking we were just going to have to accept it wasn’t going to happen... the dr re-examined my HSG results, decided I needed a hysteroscopy because I might have a polyp he missed in the first exam. After the hysteroscopy we had to wait for 3 months before they would give us more meds. We figured, what the heck, let’s try a diet and see what happens. On our first cycle after the hysteroscopy, with a different set of meds, and after losing my 10%, we got a BFP! It ended in a miscarriage and we’re currently waiting till we can try again. I’m not sure what made the difference, or if it was the combination of all the things, but it worked.

I am about to be 29 this month and I am 7 months post gastric sleeve. I was in the same thought process at you “do have weight loss surgery now and then wait 12-18 months before trying” or “do I possibly put my self and my baby at risk during a pregnancy then have a weight loss surgery after” I thought about my age, my health, my career, my finances, EVERYTHING! And my conclusion was to have the surgery now, and focus on my health, before trying for a baby. I don’t have kids but ultimately I thought losing weight and being healthy was important and more or less “ responsible” and I do NOT regret my decision at all. I’m 5’6” and my starting weight was 305 lbs, I’m now 229 lbs. it may take some time for my husband and I to conceive but it also may make it easier this time around because I’ll be healthier, either way it’s a risk I was willing to take. This surgery and this decision though shouldn’t be rushed, and it’s a decision that should ultimately be yours to make and yours only with the exception of your spouse. I wish you luck and if you have any questions please ask- this surgery changed my life and I would do it again in a heart beat.

I did it. I'm (finally!) nearing the end of my two year wait. I was also about 200 pounds over ideal body weight - 356 at 5'7". I'm now between 205 and 210 depending on the time of day. My husband and I wanted to try for a baby several years ago but decided my health is much more important. And I'm MUCH older than you. I'm 37 now and had just turned 36 when I had the surgery. I have had zero true complications.  I have had the expected hair loss, but it's growing back. And my cholesterol went up due to the low carb diet, but it's back to normal now too. If you decide to have the surgery, go to a "Bariatric Center of Excellence". All those surgeons do usually are weight loss surgeries. I actually mentioned on another post earlier this week that I would have the surgery again in a heartbeat, two year wait to try for a baby and all!

Have you tried going on the Keto diet/lifestyle? I was recently recommended it by a gf as I have Pcos. I'm also overweight but have gone on Keto and have already started to see results!
