How does disability work?

I thought your doctor determined how long you were disabled after a pregnancy. I figured 6 weeks because I had a vaginal delivery so that's when I planned to go back to work because I'm only paid while on disability. But when my doctor's office filled out the form they called me to ask when I was planning to go back. Did I have a choice?! My checkup isn't even until the day before I'm supposed to go back!

It's because if you absolutely needed to go back sooner for financial reasons, they'll write you a shorter time.

Disability will only pay for so long, but if you use FMLA you can be out for 12 weeks. They probably ask because some people opt to go unpaid for a little while to stay home longer.
