Midwife or OB?

What are you guys using and why?
This is my first and since it wasn't planned I don't have a doctor yet so I'm just trying to decide if I should go with an OB or a midwife

OB.. due to being high risk. And where I live we only have 1 midwife.. so I just prefer my OB.

midwife, a CNM if you can find one. If you have insurance, email them and get a list of covered CMMs near you. I was very surprised at what they were able to do.

Midwives all the way! They’re generally more women centered and less likely to pressure you into something you didn’t want.

I wanted a midwife because they generally are less pushy about interventions during labor, etc, which is what I wanted. At my first appointment with her, however, we discovered twins in there, which requires an OB due to the higher risk. So I get to see the OB. While I still wish I could have my all natural midwife birth, it's just not possible with the twins. That said, I freaking love my OB. He is 100% pro vaginal delivery with the twins. So anyway, if it were me having a regular singleton pregnancy, I would go with a midwife, but as long as you're comfortable with (and on the same page as) whatever provider you choose, that's all that matters.

I️ had an OB with my first. I️ felt that my visits were rushed and that my questions and concerns were often downplayed. When it came to delivering, I️ didn’t feel like I️ had an advocate or someone to give me all of my options while being induced due to preeclampsia. I️ didn’t feel properly educated and there are a few things I️ wish went differently. I’ve chosen a midwife this time, and I have loved it. It seems much more personal. I️ am able to text or call her personal number if I️ am worried or have questions. Although she leans more holistic, she is on board with everything that I️ want such as an epidural during delivery and so forth. Try asking women in your area what they chose!

I see a midwife and did with my first too.  In the event I need a c section or there’s an emergency there is an OB hospitalist on the floor at all times.  With my first my labor was not progressing and the OB kept pushing for a c section.  My midwife advocated for me and made sure I got my vaginal birth since we didn’t have any complications.

I have been going to a midwife for my yearly well women check ups for years. I️ LOVE her and I️ think unless you have a high risk need that necessitates an OB there is no reason not to go to a midwife. I️ am choosing to have a non-medicated birth and she has been supportive of that, but I️ really feel like she would support and champion any of my choices surrounding birth and pregnancy as long as there wasn’t a significant risk. When making decisions about my pregnancy and birth I️ always feel like it’s a conversation not her telling me what I️ have to do. For example I’m not having an additional ultrasound later in pregnancy to see if my placenta moved after my ultrasound at 18/19 weeks. We discussed the pros and cons and what affect it would have on my birth plan and then I️ got to make the decision. I️ cannot say enough good things about her. Generally I️ would say that it’s all about finding a provider and an office you feel good about (it could be one of their partners who is there at delivery) and not feeling like your relationship with them has any tension. Ask some friends for recommendations if you can or ask the internet for recommendations in your area.
