I Need Some Breakup Help 😔

So, my boyfriend (ex I should say)and I have dated for 9 months, and we are incredibly close. We literally know everything about each other. The last month I would say, he started to become more distant. I thought it was maybe because of football (which in case you didn't know, is a crazy commitment) and school, so I let it go. His birthday was on Friday and I spent about $50 on his present (which was like a "movie night date box" which had some popcorn and candy and a $25 Xbox gift card which I told him he could only spend it on a movie to watch with me). So yesterday I had gotten fed up with him not answering me so I said "hey gotta minute?" He said yea. So I asked if he was ok and if we were ok. And in a massive paragraph he said that he feels like a di** for doing this over text but that he doesn't want a relationship anymore and that he now realizes that he isn't a "relationship type guy". After 9 months of dating 😔 I'm so hurt and confused. He said it's not my fault, but how is it not? Can someone please help me out here? I don't know how to handle this. He's my best friend and he's gone 😞 please help!
