Modern Day Godparents

What would you say the role of a modern day godparent is? We're not overly religious so we're not choosing our godparents based on that, but we are choosing based on who will love and guide our child the best in the case we are not here anymore. If you take out the religious factor of what godparents used to be, what else would say a modern day godparent would be expected to do/have a part of?
