How did you guys ever choose an engagement ring??

Question

So my so and I have been together almost 2.5 years and we have begun looking at rings (won’t be getting engaged for a while). 
I am SO PICKY. How did you all, for those who had a say in it, pick on a ring??
It’s so hard to choose what will be ~the~ ring for the rest of my life. 
(Side note: I am not complaining. I am very grateful for my man.)
Also, if anyone has ring suggestions for me... I am a quirky, Kate Spade girl who wears red lipstick and black always, and loves vintage.
Also I enjoy oval and emerald cut, and only round cuts as solitaires.

I've showed my bf some rings that I like.. he might pick those or something similar. His sister works for a jewelry store and has good taste so I'm not worried. I'm not telling him exactly what ring I'd like. 
Personally, I want a classic style that I know I'll like forever. I like round solitaires with a pave band. I like oval with pave halo and band. And then to add a little bit of a different look I want an Art Deco-ish wedding band.

We went shopping to a lot of stores and looked at a variety of shapes and settings. I was kind of picky too, but finally at one store this ring stood out and I just loved it! My fiancée could tell and went back the next day and bought it! This pic I have my diamond wedding band on with it.

I knew I wanted emerald cut. Chose an emerald cut with a halo and diamond band. I love my ring although I’d eventually like to get rid of the halo and just have a big diamond with my diamond band. In the picture I also have on my wedding band.

I didn't really pick mine, I inherited it from my great grandma, but he couldn't have picked a better ring if he tried. Just a classically set emerald cut solitare in platinum. I don't love the look of a halo, and I also don't know how timeless it is. Look on the Brilliant Earth website - they do custom designs but also resell vintage jewelry, maybe you can find some styles you like!

I looked online at multiple jewellery sites and after about a week I narrowed it down to my top 3. When I decided from those 3 I looked up the location of where he could buy it.  Then him and I went together to look at it.  I loved it so I bought it.

I looked around on my own for a while to figure out what I really liked. I mean, I knew most of my preferences, but I needed to be sure of what I could see myself wearing for the rest of my life. Once I figured that out, he and I had a talk about the future. He pulled out his laptop and started browsing jewelry store sites and asked my opinion on several rings. Once he understood my taste, he shopped on his own. My only requests were: yellow gold and no diamond as the main stone.
