There’s more than one kind of pill. Most do two things: prevent ovulation and implantation. If you missed a pill or were late then it’s possible to ovulate. Sometimes it just fails.

depends on what pill you are on. I'm on the mini pill, norethindrone, and it only prevents ovulation in up to 50% of cycles. prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus so that sperm doesn't get through and thinning the lining of the uterus so an egg can't attach. if you aren't on this pill though you shouldn't be ovulating as other pills prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation
