Should I tell my boss??

So I just started working at a pediatric clinic last week. I am a medical assistant so we do all the vitals. So I had a patient and she was under 2 so I had to do her temperature rectally. Well the mom didn’t speak much English at all and had the baby positioned in a very weird way. So what I though to be her rectum turned out to be the babies vagina that I had just put the thermometer in. I didn’t notice until the mother moved her a little. I took it out as soon as I realized and did a proper rectal temp. I’m not sure if I should tell my boss. In a way I feel like I violated that poor baby and I have been having such anxiety over the situation that I actually cried because I just feel so bad. Should I speak to my boss and tell her what I did?

You really don't need to worry. You didnt hurt the little one. Next time just look closer before you take the temp :)

I was a medical assistant once and although I never worked with children, I’ve made a cringeworthy mistake. I’ve made tons. One day I got 2 room numbers mixed up. Doctor told me to give a dexamethasone shot to room 2, I went to room 4. She hadn’t even seen the doctor yet. She looks at me funny when I come in. I didn’t understand why until he asked me which room I had just gone in. He wasn’t mad, she was going to get one anyways...but she hadn’t even been examined. I felt terrible. It was an honest mistake and I wouldn’t say anything about it. You will have to learn to let it go and try harder to do it correctly the next time. I just recently worked in a hospital before I became a sahm and we made a simple mistake of trying to place an in and out catheter in a female and it’s pretty difficult because you have to know the difference between the vaginal canal and the urethra. You have no idea how many times I’ve placed it into the vagina lmao. So don’t worry about it.

Well, it was an honest mistake and if you'd wanted to say something it should have been then. I'm positive no harm came to the baby if that's what youre worried about. If anything this is a learning experience to maybe quickly spread those tiny cheeks and then insert. Are you new to the field?

For your conscious and sanity at least come clean to your boss. Explain how it occurred. It will be better if you come clean rather than it come out later. The mom could have noticed and didn't say anything because of the language barrier.
