Is f*ggot offensive/a swear word?

Ok so I always thought f*g/f*ggot was a bad word. BUT, I started watching this show that aired from the late 90s to early 2000s, and they say those words as casually as we say “literally”. I always thought it was offensive, but this show is tripping me up now (if anyone wants to know the show is Will & Grace and 2/3 main characters are gay so that’s what they refer to when they use the term). Anyway, just wanting clarification. Thanks.

Yaaaa I wouldn’t use a 90’s sitcom to set the bar about what is and isn’t offensive. Especially since Will and Grace was in the earlier days of LGBT representation on TV

That show is old, outdated, as ignorant as most common people of its time, and not a reflection of how offensive the word is today. It was also most likely straight people throwing the word around, of course its casual to them, it doesn’t hurt them, but it hurts the people of the lgbt+ community and no old hetero show overrules the thoughts and feeling of those actually affected by the word

I don’t think it should be thrown around by people who aren’t lgbt. I call myself that all the time, but I don’t want anyone else calling me that because I’ve been in abusive and hateful situations where that word was used in a negative way, and I know that it isn’t really a positive word. And I would never call anyone else that. But that’s just me. If anyone ever expressed to me that they didn’t want me to say that around them then I wouldn’t out of politeness. Not only is it offensive when used in a particular way, but it’s inappropriate in general.

It is offensive, but it’s something where every individual decides how much weight it has. Like if I have a BFF and they use it in fun conversation with me TOWARDS ME it’s alright because we have established a friendship where it’s okay only in that scenario. If used in any other way it crosses the very very fine line into offensive.
However, the answer yes or no to it being offensive should not at all be based off of the small number of personal relationships with boundaries that permit it’s use.

I think it's offensive just as a racial slur would be, but the people who it is directed towards can claim it. Maybe the writers/ creators were trying to do that? I've never seen the show so I don't know.

It’s a homophobic slur, I wouldn’t go with it if I were you. Don’t let “Will and Grace” be the bar for which you set any standards lol. I know the LGBT+ community have reclaimed this slur, the way black people reclaimed the N word, and each person decides whether it is offensive for them to use towards each other or not. However, to be on the safe side, leave it out of your vocabulary.
