Can you be in love with someone you've never dated?

I've really liked this guy for over a year. One of my friends says I'm in love with him because of the way I talk about him and how I think about him all the time but I'm not sure if I agree. I've don't think I've ever been "in love" before so there's nothing I can really compare it to. What's you're opinion?
