Is indoctrination in the military a problem?

Question

Indoctrination: the process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically. 
Indoctrination is also implemented in many religions, cults and some would argue the educational system itself. What are your thoughts on indoctrination in the military? 
• Is it necessary?
• Does it have a negative impact on the individuals serving?

Heck yes it’s a thing, and in my area they specifically target young middle school to highschool kids who don’t have as many options as the well to do rich kids or kids with good grades. Start them when they’re young and vulnerable and they’re easy to indoctrinate. 
It is a problem, and I’m incredibly fuckin annoyed STILL that my school district just lets them show up at all times in schools and provides them with the student body’s info so practically 24/7 they can dog children who aren’t as blessed. I am also still peeved that they allow them to BRIBE kids into signing paperwork to get more info on them. Sign up for a free T-shirt, or charger, or water bottle/new notebooks/backpacks etcetc. I didn’t need these things, but the kids who had barebones could really use the free school supplies. It’s predatory. 
As for the military itself? I have talked before on the rape and sexual harassment side of it, but it’s also not unheard of that a certain religion in the US military is pushed for and that people are bullied and hazed for not being of that religion.

Recruitment into the military with misleading info is a problem. Particularly when it’s geared toward minors. 
Once people are in, I don’t believe they’re being like brainwashed or whatever, but I do see the priority toward obedience and loyalty over critical thinking.

5 branches of military, all doing different shit, taught different things, for different amount of times, in different places, lead by different people, like I'm not even sure how to answer this question. If you haven't been in a branch of the military how would you ever be able to understand or even give an opinion? From the outside looking in? Seems legit.

The brings me to the question of what are you referring to as Indoctrination? 
Because by the general definition of the term, no. It doesn’t happen, you are allowed to disagree with any orders given to you, saying you can give a logical reason on why you disagree. If you disagree then you are criticizing. Unless you get punished for thinking or feeling that way. It’s not indoctrination. 
Technically raising a child a certain way could be viewed the same by that definition. If I raise my child to never question the view, then punish my child for having a different opinion or different views that I choose, then I’m raising my child in a doctrine. 
Btw. The archaic definition of indoctrination is simply teaching or instruction. So by the original use of the word, everything in life is indoctrination.

A certain amount of indoctrination is necessary in the military. But for 1, military service (atleast in the U.S) is voluntary. So, you agree to live by those conditions when you sign up. If you are going to be trained for war, there has to be a certain amount of brainwashing that goes into it because you are training people to go into a situation that they may not come back from. When I was in the Army, it was like being on one big team. If we didn't have a set of common core beliefs and the same training then I don't see how a unit could be cohesive enough to survive something like an attack or war, or even daily taskings. Yes, indoctrination is necessary in the military because that's what makes it the military.

I’m not understanding the question. Is it saying that people are/are not being indoctrinated into JOINING? Or that military members are/are not indoctrinated once they’re in?
I think that young people are certainly encouraged to join up, but (at least in my experience) the recruiters didn’t look at socioeconomic status. It was more of a “Hey, you’re walking upright, wanna save the world?” I think society is more pushy of “poor” people joining than the military is.
However, indoctrination absolutely happens within the military, and that’s not a bad thing. You’re taught from day one of boot camp to follow orders without question, because chances are that once you get in the shit your commander will give you an order that sounds like it’ll kill you, but will end up saving your life. Or you’ll get an order that will absolutely kill you, but will save the lives of a dozen other people.
