Long distance relationships

How does everyone feel about long distance relationships. I'm thinking about wanting to date someone who just entered the navy. He is in boot camp right now and the only way of contact we have for two months is through letters. Then we can call all the time after that but he still won't have any vacation time for a while. I have also never been in a relationship before but I really do want to try with this guy. I know I really have to wait for him and see if he wants to try long distance.

Has anyone been in a long distance relationship and how did it work out?
