How long to get pregnant

Me and my husband have been ttc for our first child over a year now and still nothing.

He keeps telling me that i need to go to the doctors to get things checked and know if have a problem, if its him or me but i am scared of going because i am scared that their is something wrong and that we cant conceive.

Every time my periods come im really disappointed but at the same time really scared that their is something wrong. How long did it take you to get pregnant and how long after you ve been to see the doctor? Pls help
