sweep membranes?

im 39 weeks and i keep hearing about the doctor sweeping your membranes. is this something i have to ask the doctor to do lr do they just do it on there own?

I had to ask my doctor when I was pregnant with my 2 year old!! I had to be like 38 weeks because I was due on November 12th! She did the sweep on October 30th and I started having contractions within hours but didn’t go to the hospital til the next morning but I did have him on Oct. 31st!! I was so over being pregnant so I was so happy she did it!!

It depends where you go and who you see. I probably never would have had it offered to me unless I had asked because my husband is in the military and had to be gone for a few weeks over our first two baby's due dates. He totally would have missed their births if I hadn't gotten it done. Where I am seen, they won't do it until 39 weeks and only if you are so much effaced and dilated already. Even then, there is zero guarantee it will work. I see a midwife and know not all of them are willing to do sweeps. But anyway, the sweeps worked both times and both our babies came the next morning!

With my oldest my dr did it without me knowing lol. She goes you’re going to feel some pressure. After I was able to leave I lost my mucus plug with the bloody show. That following night around 11pm labour started for me. Didn’t have a sweep done with my second as she was 9 days early.
