HIV testing twice?

Not a big deal but when I first started getting prenatal care they tested for all stds including HIV, so today at 28weeks I did my glucose test & was tested again only for HIV. Does anyone know why they do this?

My practice does 2 also (I had a second syphilis screen, as well, when I got my second HIV test). I know HIV testing is mandated by law, but I’m not sure if both tests are or just one. Like someone else said, there’s a window period so technically you could be newly infected, but the test can’t pick it up. They usually do antibody tests, which has a much longer window period than the more sensitive nucleic acid tests (which they do when you donate blood, etc). I’ll likely get a second screen for chlamydia and gonorrhea, as well, since I am opting to skip the eye ointment at birth, which I’m totally cool with (so is my midwife)...all the STD testing is precautionary...

They told me I’ll be getting tested again as well closer to delivery. They just want to make sure.

It’s part of the 3rd trimester screen that hospitals need done I think by state law. Or at least where I live.

I’ve had it done twice so far too. I assumed it’s just routine as I have no risk factors for hiv.

Because it can take up to 6 month to test positive after exposure. They probably want to make sure you & baby are taken care of properly if it shows up.
