Is it cheating if you make an outline on a pic first?

So I use a reference pic to get general shape of a face and eyes and what not, is that cheating lol? I didn’t use it after that just as the first sketch  for the basic shape of a girls face. I don’t wanna be a cheater :(

As long as you aren't copyrighting anything (the end result looks different drastically than the original), go for it.

References are a huge resource as an artist and tracing or outlining pictures can be a good way to start out and practice your anatomy. They're something to take advantage of and use as much as you need. Utilizing the resources at your disposal to practice your craft isn't cheating in the slightest.
As long as you aren't claiming the reference picture as your own and you're not profiting off the picture without credit to the reference you should be golden. :)

It’s very good to use references! Tracing over a picture can help aide you in drawing, but the thing is that you shouldn’t trace over it, post it, and call it your own. Other than that, it’s still fine for referencing ❤️

Its not really “ cheating” or what the art community calls as “art theft” as long as the image isnt copy righted, and is an ACTUAL person created for reference use
