Any pointers for new mom?

Question

I’m due in 30 days.. this is my first child.
I’ve researched a ton but would love to hear pointers from moms..
How is healing after birth? 
Any pointers you have that u wish u knew when u had your first child?
How long did you take off for maternity leave?

I took off 6 weeks and the recovery was not nearly as bad as I anticipated.  i have a natural unmedicated birth with a 1st degree tear requiring 3 stitches

The first thing that comes to mind is when you pick baby up after a nap, make sure to get out any burp they may have before laying them down for a diaper change or anything. My son was a few days old and I didn’t even think anything of it when I picked him up then laid him down to change him. As soon as I laid him down, something happened(aspirated the burp or liquids from it) and he turned red and couldn’t breathe. He was struggling so much I’ll never forget his face. I immediately picked him up and faced him forward patting his back firmly and what seemed like forever, about 5-10 seconds later all this milk came shooting out and then he was ok. It was very scary as a new mom. My instincts just kicked in. Since newborns usually eat right before they fall asleep, there may still be some air even after they’ve already burped. He must of been about to burp at that moment I laid him down and it backfired on him.

I can't speak to healing after birth as I had an emergency c-section with my first which made the healing process very hard (repeat c-sections were nothing in comparison). if you plan to breastfeed, drink something every single time your baby does. Take stool softeners - especially if you are given iron supplements. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it, even if it's just for somebody to sit with baby for 20 minutes so you can have a hot shower. Rest as often as you can. I found the little bouncy seats to be one of my most used items in the first few weeks because they are so portable and you can plop baby in it and lay on the couch and rock them gently when I felt too exhausted to do it myself. As for babe - newborns really just eat, burp, sleep, and poop. the nurse at the hospital will show you how to swaddle, bathe, change and feed them. They will go through periods of cluster feeding where they eat constantly and that does not mean they aren't getting enough milk - it just means they are getting ready to grow - so don't give up on breastfeeding if this happens. Afterwards they sleep a lot for a while and then babe will be bigger and so will your milk supply. Congrats on your first baby hun - You'll do great!

If you can try to move as much as you can. Wear the compression socks for swelling! Don't eat a lot of salty food if you can help it. Sleep whenever you can! Take all the help that's offered! Drink water! You may be sore so take the medication they give you on time. I had a side effect from the I ibuprofen my throat swelled up. Take care of yourself too. Take a shower fix your hair.
