Preemie in Nicu Question??

Ok so my sons currently 2 lbs 14 oz he’s 2.5 weeks old now his birth weight was 3 lbs 2 oz he was a 29 weeker. The Nicu recently switched him over to formula do you think that will help him put on weight faster ?? Because I was kinda iffy about them switching him to formula but they say he is taking it pretty well .

I wish I saw this sooner, if you still want the benefits of breast milk and are pumping they might be game to add the powdered formula to the breast milk. We did that during my sons NICU stay and for half his feedings once he came home, other half I just nursed. We did this until he was 8lbs then went to straight breastmilk.

when my son was in the nicu (he was a 30 weeker) they gave him donor breast milk until he was 35 weeks gestational age. that was because the hospital gave me the depo shot after giving birth to him without telling me the side effects of it (it dries up your supply). see if your hospital does the same thing. if so request for your child to receive donor milk or your milk of you're still able to pump. as the parent you have a right to make decisions for his well being and breast milk is what's best for them right now

if you still want to breastfeed tell them that! they can fortify your breast milk woth a higher calorie formula... my lo had to do that for a few weeks, but then refused the fortified breast milk and went strictly breast milk. he will be 2 in a week and just stopped nursing about 2 months ago. you have the right to speak up about what they feed him.

Yes I do think it’ll help him gain weight. Doctors told me the same thing about my daughter. Just one day with two formula feelings and she gained an ounce. We are now back to only breast milk though.
