What do people think?

Just a bit curious really; what do people think when they see other people’s self harm/scars? Just be honest.

When I see someone's self harm scars, I get curious. I wonder what drove them to it, are they feeling better now, do they still do it, etc.

Well, being a self harmer myself, I look at them and see sort of a brother or sister. I feel a connection with them just because I know that they have been through the same or similar shit as me. And it’s rare at to find someone who understands. Don’t even have to talk to them about it, I just know we have at least one thing in common just from seeing the scars. 
As for what “regular” people think lol who have never done it - it depends on the person. When I was in school I would get comments like “pathetic. Why are you so desperate for attention.” 😑 but now that I’m an adult.. the reactions have been much different. My boss at work saw them once and she just gave me this look 😠 and said “girllllll! You know you can talk to me about anything”... and I’ve been in the drive through at a fast food place, and the cashier saw them when I handed her money and she was like “oh honey... are you okay?” 
I don’t like when people notice them and make comments. I wish they just wouldn’t. But empathetic/concerned comments are better than rude ass ones.

I think that that person is strong, because they had to have been going through a lot at one point in their life but they overcame that and got over their hurdles.

Having scars myself I try to hide it in public, sometimes when people walk past me and I see their eyes looking at my arm and then the look on their face, that’s the worst thing. A lot of people have a very negative expression I can’t understand what they’re feeling, some are just completely shocked like they saw a ghost or something..but then my scars are pretty bad.

i have self harmed many times before. 
when i see other people with scars, i feel like i gain a certain level of understanding of their inner workings. there is no judgment involved. 
when people notice mine (i stopped trying to cover them up years ago) it doesn’t bother me. it either opens the door for me to explain the psychology behind it and inform them — or it lets me know they are closed minded and that i can put into place certain boundaries with that person.

What drove that person to self harm themselves like that? Also why do that in the first place?

I noticed a girls scars at work one time, different job where I'm at now, and I literally went in the back to do the dishes and cried.
