When do ovarian cysts occur?

Do ovarian cysts only happen around ovulation? Or can they occur at anytime of your cycle? I’m pretty sure I don’t ovulate for another week but whenever I touch my right ovary I feel a sharp pain there. Some people said it could be a cyst. Do they play a role in ovulation? Thanks for the help.

I feel them every month around when I ovulate. They rupture then reabsorb until your next cycle.

they happen throughout but burst during ovulation which is the mid cycle pain some feel. if the cyst is very large or shows on a u/s as dark (blood filled aka chocolate cyst) then it needs to be removed and can cause pain throughout your cycle. I especially noticed my large chocolate cyst during AF which also lead to my eventual endometriosis diagnosis.
