progesterone while pregnant?

I saw a post a few days ago and the lady said once her doctor confirms she is pregnant she starts progesterone.. I asked what the use of progesterone was for but never heard anything. can someone explain went you might take it while pregnant?

Some women have problems with progesterone levels and have to be on it in the first trimester to prevent miscarriage until the pregnancy is stabilized. Also others have to be on it from 16weeks onwards to help prevent them from going into preterm labor. There maybe be other reasons but those are the two scenarios I know of :)

Without progesterone, you cannot sustain a pregnancy. Thus, low progesterone will cause a miscarriage. I was just tested for low progesterone too, because I was still breastfeeding when I got pregnant.

it's used for woman who ussaully have a history of miscarriages as it helps prevent one to occur.

I had progesterone injections with my second pregnancy from 16 weeks till 34 to keep me from pre-term labor. My first was born 6 weeks early with no definable cause. I was able to carry my second child all the way to 38 weeks with the injections. I’m now pregnant with my 3rd and I’m sure they’ll want me on them again this time around too.

My family has a history of numerous miscarriages and I expressed that to my dr my levels were low so he put me on it to keep from miscarrying.

I have to take it as well. My doctor explained it to like this- progesterone is what helps the baby form and provides it survive until the placenta is fully formed and can provide what the baby needs.
