The phrase itself is cringy. But there's no denying that there are things I can do as an adult that my child cannot.

I think it depends on how you explain it and who you're saying it to. For example, if I tell it to my kids it's because I want them to grow up a different way than I did and I think that's okay. for other adults, I can't expect them to drop everything and do what I want them to.

Depends on what the situation is. 
Bad habits, bad language, etc, that phrase is hypocritical. 
But as a parent I can do things that my kids cannot. Therefore sometimes it applies. 
Most of the time though I think it’s used in a poor/hypocritical context.

It simply means that we can learn from other people's experiences, and that we don't always have to do what other people are doing. Just because someone else is doing this, this or that, doesn't mean that I have to do those things, because look at where those other people are. And I think that the majority of people who say that, are simply trying to keep others from making the same mistakes as they've made because they don't want to see other people getting hurt, or ruining their lives.

The phrase “lead by example” is the opposite of this and is what professionals recommend works best for actually teaching children. 
So I disagree with the original phrase. I think it’s old school. Like some nonsense such as “children should be seen and not heard”. That’s what it reminds me of.

I tell my husband day in and day out that we need to be models for our daughter, not “oh let’s make her better than us by doing what we want and telling her it’s not okay.” Yes you’re a parent and can parent how you want, but it would be hypocritical to tell your child not to do something while you can do it unless it’s something that isn’t age appropriate (e.g. a 5 year old smoking, a 12 year old drinking).

I don’t like it and definitely would not say it to my son. I hope to teach him by example. Yes, there’s a bunch of things that I can do and he can’t, but I’m hoping he won’t see me doing them.
