How do I prevent the nickname?

We have been pondering boy names and we LOVE the name Phillip. However, we both don’t care for the nickname Phil. How do you name a kid knowing everyone will call him a nickname you don’t like? I understand it’s kind of snotty. I can’t be the only one who has run into this problem!

Well you’ll have zero clue over his friends so I’d just face the reality that you can ask your family not too.....but his friends 1000% will or depending on your last name, may call him by that (which guys sometimes do). 
I’d suggest maybe finding a different name if Phil will really bother you because the only people you can really ask/control the situation with is your family OR be that crazy Mom anytime someone says “Phil” you snap and say “his name is Phillip” lol

You definitely can’t help what his friends will call him at school (or anywhere else outside the home), but I grew up with a friend named Philip, and everyone I knew called him that because none of his family ever used Phil - just very few of his buddies at school called him Phil and it was in more of a facetious but endearing manner.

My brother's name is Thomas.  We just always called him that. And our whole family did.  We found out when he was in 8th grade that everyone at school referred to him as Tom.  He said he didn't care that family still called him Thomas.  Now he is 30, known in his entire professional/friend life as Tom, but family still calls him Thomas.  My kids and my fiancé do too.  It's how I introduced him so thats what they call him-he never corrected it.  
Also, my ex husband goes by Chris, but his family still calls him Christopher.
So if you love Phillip, you can call him that, have family and school call him that, but just know that some day, he may choose to shorten it.  But my bet is, he'll still be ok with mom and dad calling him Phillip :)

My sons name is Wesley and i HATE the nickname Wes. Like... hate. 
I’ve just told family I dont care for them to call him Wes. Thankfully my family is into the silly nicknames vs literal nickname. 
Just say “We dont want him called Phil, but you can call him....?”  Then say a nickname you’d rather. Like “Lil Man, Mr. ,” etc. 
Obviously you can’t control what comes out of peoples mouths, but I would still make a point and tell people how you feel about it

my daughter is amelia jane. Lots of people tried AJ. i squashed that. i seriously hated that one. Some considerate people ASKED what a good nickname is. I contemplated. and now she is mimi. And it works for us. She is 2, and mimi is so easy. she can say amelia, but mimi is easier. Bonus, all her friends call her mimi cause its easy!! So try offering a nickname you can stand!

Could depend on your kid too. He might want to be called Phil as he gets older. But I think if you call him Philip then people (family and your friends) will follow suit.

My friend is Michael and he hates Mick, but settles for Mike. Since then no-one has called him Mick.

My boyfriend’s name is Daniel and he ALWAYS told me to NEVER call him Danny because he hates the hell out of it. Most people just call him Dan or his nickname (for his nieces and nephews) DEEDO. 
Most people probably won’t call your son “Phil” until he gets older and at the point he may want to be called that or not. 
People do the same with my son. His name is Dakota. I call him Kota and he doesn’t like it when other people outside of our family call him that. He doesn’t even like DJ as a nickname. Some people also call him “kody” which I don’t like and we correct them and say “Dakota”. My mom went as far as calling him “booboo” which I don’t like but my son has a ton of nicknames, that mainly I use. Sometimes I call him “Jonathan” because that’s his dads name and when he acts like his dad or I’m really mad at him, that’s what I call him. He will answer to it too! 😂😂😂 
My point is, you can try to stop people from using the nicknames but at the end of the day, it’s up to you to correct it or leave it be.

My boss name his son David and they did not want dave. He went through to high school before anyone started calling him Dave. But the family still calls him David.
