Is 9 to young to decide which parent you want to live with?

I have two sons aged 7 and 9. Their dad and I split when my oldest was 2 years old. He has always expressed he would like to live with his dad but I'm not ready to let him go, I don't think I will ever be :(. (his dad lives 3 hours away). What age do you think is appropriate to make that decision? His father has also been pushing for in for years

Where I am from they are not allowed to chose which parent they can live with when one parent has primary custody until they are 13.

No, not too young at all. I wanted to live with my dad since I was 5 to 16. My mom never let me go and I hated her for it. By the time I was 9, I was begging my dad in secret to take her to court and take me away because she refused to give up custody. I believe it should always be up to the child unless one parent in not capable of taking care of them.

It might depend on the kid. I feel like each kid matures differently and some might want to go because they're just closer to that parent and some might for more immature reasons.

At 9 they’re likely still thinking about which parent lets them eat the most junk food and buys them the most toys.

If you plan on going to court, they court won’t let a child pick a household until a certain age (age is different in each state). If you don’t plan on going to court, in my opinion, you have the say whether the child likes it or not. If the father has a problem with you saying no; that is when you go to court.
