I want butt sex

So I’ve been w/ my significant other for 4 years now and we tried anal once or twice and it really hurt so we didn’t try it again but I think if we eased into it it might work, but idk if he’ll be into that (he’s not really into butt stuff) ... so my question is how can I slightly suggest that I wanna do butt stuff w/o really saying it. I know I should feel comfortable talking about it but he when we first started talking ( 4 years ago) he mentioned he wasn’t into butt stuff so I’ve never really brought it up but now I just feel like our sex is lacking something. Comments? Suggestions?
