Are you for or against using animals in medical research?

Question

I’m doing an essay about the use of animals in medical research and I need statistics. Are you pro or against this topic? (I’d appreciate your opinion too, if you want comment here below 😉)

Okay I'll post the same as I did when this topic came up last week, I'm not going to vote because I don't like animal testing and I'm morally against it, but currently there is no alternative unless we just stop any medical advancements which doesn't even bare thinking about.
The reasons animals are needed for medical testing is firstly, we do not have the technological advancements to not need them, plain and simple, stem cell research is getting better all the time and will hopefully one day negate the need for animal testing but it is currently Farr too limited to work at the level needed.
Secondly, humans cannot be used in the early stages of testing because there are too many variables, from genetics, height weight, lifestyle, diet, exercise levels, existing illness and conditions, and immunity levels. The early stages of testing need to have reliable and consistent results, meaning they use animals that are bred and raised in a captive and sterile environment, they get no outside influence that can alter the results, they are as pure as possible across the board, without that the results would be in accurate and unusable.
For anyone who says the testing should be done on people, well it is, but only in the later stages when it is safer and they can start to see how the results are affected by all of the previously mentioned variables. There are medical research facilities all around the world that test on people, there's one 2 miles from me called Simbec, it is the place that discovered Viagra, they were doing human trials on a newly developed heart medication and discovered its special side affect that is now its main use although it is still used as a heart medication. Saying the testing should be done on people giving consent or on criminals shows a complete lack of understanding on how medical testing and medicinal development actually works.

I feel those who are against should volunteer to have these drugs tested on themselves. Guaranteed when they see the risks of that they wouldn’t mind testing them on animals anymore. I don’t agree with testing for cosmetics because there’s other ways, but at the moment there’s no other way to safely do it for medicine. I do think research into other methods is needed and should be ongoing but until there’s a safe alternative test on animals.

I don't see any reason why we can't test on humans. Animals are not in a position to give consent obviously and some of these medications have terrible side effects. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be prepared to be test subjects for the right amount of money.

Against it 100% just for the simple fact that humans and animals don’t react the same way, even if they did I’d be against it. You don’t need to torture animals for any reason. Even in humans everyone can react to things different so it’s not going to do much good.

We have almost no reason to use animals for testing. We have alternatives that are cheaper and more effective (we have created a epidermis like substance to test products on) and more than 90% of animal testing is pointless because we are different beings and we already know it will be ineffective/harmful to the being.

I would prefer to have other more accessible options, but unfortunately there aren't. 
I'm not exactly 'for it' but I don't oppose to it. I work as a initiate in a research lab and I've managed a few mice myself and they're treated the most humane and safe way possible. We have a lot of guidelines and protocols that needs to be followed and I can even send some of them if anyone wants to read.

Ahh I can’t answer. If it’s the only way we can test and advance medicines and there’s no actual torture of the animals, then I can grudgingly say ok. But as far as I’m aware (and I have to say I don’t have a lot of knowledge because the whole subject makes me feel confused and upset so i avoid it) there isn’t a lot of evidence to show that it actually HELPS to test on the animals before human trials. It’s all very complicated and I think it’s difficult reach a correct answer

I'm against but I do struggle with it. I think the standards we have now are unethical and awful but even with improvements I'm not sure I could support it. That said, where I struggle is how tests are done for new medicines and other lifesaving innovations? I'm not sure the answer to that - if there is one that doesnt involve animal testing and still has all the benefits...I'm for that definitely but I'm not sure that's possible.
