Toe nail is completely off what should I do?

So about 2-3 weeks ago my son slammed a decorative wood covered heater on his toe an I just went to look at his toe last night an the toenail is gone. I am worried about it, but then it don’t seem to be bothering him at all. But should I keep it covered or what should I do? I know it’s gross looking but he won’t let me touch it to take the skin off

Nail wounds gross me out so much lol but that happened to my friend in college. She went to the doctor and they stitched her nail back on (hers fell off right when the injury happened so she had it). I’d probably take him in so they can look at it. I would doubt it’s super serious but I’d be worried about infection and what to expect as it heals (like is the nail going to come back), but those things really freak me out so I might over-react.
