Where do I start??

Question

Ok.. I’m pregnant and think I want to use cloth diapers this time around. What all do I need?? It’s kind of confusing when I look it up. I see liners and inserts and covers. What exactly should I start with and can you recommend brands for me as well?? Thank you!

if you do social media, I'd check out the fluff love and cloth diaper science Facebook group, they give you a lot of information, comparison and contrasts for the different types and options. if not, then their website. if you are really big on natural fibers and organic options I would start at greenmountaindiapers.com in the info section, then just do a search in YouTube and go down the list.

I prefer pocket diapers. What you need for them are inserts and the diapers. My favorite brands are Alva, Nora's Nursery, Mama Koala, and Kawaii Goodnight Heavy Wetter. You will want to use a liquid detergent such as All Free and Clear. Powder detergents are more likely to build up in the leg gussets. You will also need a diaper pail, a liner for your pail, and a wet bag if you plan to use cloth in public. For the diaper pail, you can use a trashcan and you can find the liners on amazon. You will want two to alternate them so there is always one in thhe bin, even when one is washing. You will want a diaper sprayer when baby starts solids. They hook up to your toilet. Or you can swish the diapers in the toilet if you want to forego the sprayer. If you're planning on using cloth wipes, you will need a spray bottle to put your wipe solution in. You can look up ways to make your own solution online. I use the little square baby wash cloths for wipes. You can watch videos on YouTube to help prepare you. I liked Naturally Thrifty Mom. Below, are the diapers I use.

It totally depends on which style you want to use. Do you want to start with newborn diapers, or go straight to "one size" and use disposables until those fit?

I do covers and inserts because I personally felt that always stuffing pocket diapers was a hassle and I like the flexibility of covers and inserts. I use best bottom brand diapers and inserts. the diaper itself is a plastic cover and then an insert snaps in. if the baby only pees you can reuse the cover and just put in a new insert rather than having to wash the entire diaper. currently for my 3 month old I have 12 diapers and 25 inserts, I was diaper laundry about every 4 days. covers and inserts will be a tad more expensive than pockets but I feel the price is worth it. if looking for a cheaper brand  buttons are a nice option. flip diapers and baby tooshy are also very affordable but don't have snaps for the inserts and instead the insert just lays inside the diaper. both brands work very well they are just a bit bulky compared to the best bottom diapers.

So... I cloth diaper. I use LBB from amazon. They come with microfiber inserts and are fine. They are pocket diapers, but I don’t use them that way. I just lay the inserts in the covers. We also have 4 flip covers. I bought some bamboo fleece inserts.
I wish I would have known that fleece and microfiber are great at wicking, but hemp and cotton tend to soak up better.
We have hemp overnight fitted diapers that are great.
I felt totally overwhelmed as well, but the truth is that you use what you have and it works! We don’t have a sprayer and most of the time my daughters poop just clumps off into the toilet without swishing (now that she eats solids).
I second having wet bags and pail liners.
This decision is not as big as you think.
