Statutory rape

Persia

I just read that a 33 year old, Camden, NJ police officer fathered a child with a 15 year old.

He took a plea and was sentenced to 5 years probation. There wasn't any mention of him having to register as a sex offender, and his defense was that the girl stated she was 18 which seems to be a very common occurrence in our society.

This is a two part question:

1st do you think this is an appropriate sentence, and 2nd what do you think should be an appropriate repricussion for children who lie about their age?

Personally I think his sentence needs to be stiffer. If it was someone who wasn't part of the force their sentence would've been much worse. With that said she knew that if he were told the right age he might not have taken things any further. I think she should hold some of that responsibility since she went through the trouble of lying to be with him. We need to stop letting our justice system be so one-sided.
