godparents?

so how necessary are godparents? w3 got married pretty young and are having our first at 22yrs old. none of our friends or siblings are old enough/ready for the responsibility of being godparents if something happens to us. advice, please!

My god-mother growing up was a pretty big influence on my life. I wasn’t raised religious, but she brought a different world view than my parents had and was someone I always knew I could count on. I don’t think they are absolutely necessary, but I do think they are a huge benefit socially and emotionally if they are committed to your child. 
Our babe will actually have two godmothers and a godfather, but none of them will be responsible for custody if something should happen to us. We really just want our kids to have responsible influences with lives and perspectives that are different to ours, but with values that are similar. We are asking my brother and his wife to be the guardians.

We really aren’t haven’t godparents. We will certainly have a will drawn up for legal guardianship if something were to ever happen to us. But godparents aren’t automatically taking on the kids. They are named for spiritual guidance only and can serve as legal guardianship IF you put that in writing.

I'm not doing god parents for my children. the only reason I had god parents was because I was raised Catholic. since we're not religious we don't really need them

we DON'T have this arranged yet, God forbid anything occurs... but I know we're going to do it legally and arrange with an attorney etc along with a WILL after 2nd is born in November of this year... in the meantime, we have my parents inlaws in mind I think I'd trust over my sis in law and brother, they're not suitable.. they have their life with travels and fun, don't need to tie them down with responsibilities...

Godparents do not necessarily take custody of children should something happen to the parents. Although they can be legally designated as the would be guardians, godparents are often viewed as those who are going to lead the child in a chosen faith.
