Is self harm and getting a tattoo the same thing?

I got into a debate with a friend recently. She says self harm is not serious because it is simply like getting a tattoo. I disagree. I feel the tattoo is something beautiful that you love. When you self harm you feel
Pain but without the beautiful art to show for, only a scar you hide. What are your thoughts?

What a delusional person. A person self harms because they are utterly broken and need to deal with the pain somehow. A tattoo people get for various reasons but, as far as I am concerned, none of the same reasons a person self harms. This is actually insulting, to hear that this person doesn't think self harming isn't a big deal.

My husband deals with these issues with high school kids, it’s a huge problem. 
It’s a massively damaging issue, whilst it’s possible for tattoos to be used as a form of self harm that’s not always the case & saying the two things are the same is an incredibly stupid and uneducated attitude to have.

I know someone who was friends with a tattoo artist who used a clean needle to ‘tattoo’ her without ink so it would not mark her skin to stop her self harming. To her the pain was the same and stopped her doing it at home with what ever she could find.. self harm is something different to everyone.

It's definitely not the same with tattoos you can show them off to everyone because it's a beautiful thing but scars are hidden away from everyone because people think it's not beautiful by having scars and people are judgemental over people self harming

I disagree with your friend. It is not the same, but I can kind of see where they’re coming from, sort of, barely.
I have issues with self harm and last year I got 6 tattoos in about 5 months, because it kind of has the same feeling. I wanted to hurt myself, but instead I got tattoos to bring beauty into my pain and get something that would help me later on.

It depends what kind of self harm. If someone is just really kinky and masochistic then kind of (?) but if their self harming is in any way correlated to a mental health issue or they're actually putting them self in danger by doing it it's totally different.

those two things are no where near the same. tattoos are a symbol of something you adore. a memory, a song, a symbol for something, tattoos are meant for remembering. self harm is different. self harm is when you’re in a different part of your mind. youre thinking of nothing else at the time. you’re causing pain to yourself for different reasons than a tattoo. (This is not me justifying self harm at all. this question just bothers me that someone would think these two are the same thing. I have self harmed and also want tattoos and it is not the same feeling.)
