Genetic testing...... to do or not to do?!?!

I need some input. Just had our consultation for ivf. That was an intense amount of information but we are excited to start this process. We were given the option to do genetic testing (it will cost us about 6 grand out of pocket) I want to know if it’s really worth it? I should mention that my hubs and I are both 31, trying for over 2 years with 1 miscarriage about 18 months ago and 3 failed IUIs.

I'm proof PGS is the best way to go! Cancer survivor, age 40, 4 MCs, one blocked tube, blood clotting among other things and here I am almost 14 weeks with our baby boy💙 1st transfer was a success. I gave up my career, smoking, coffee, and so much but it's worth it! I have leftover meds and I'm willing to donate them to a future mom doing PGS because I believe in the process. I will not donate to someone willing to go through countless cycles of IVF. Eventhough using normal embryos is not guaranteed, I still believe it gives the best chance. If you know of someone who needs progesterone (in oil or suppositories), Lupron, estrogen or Gonal F, please tell them to send me a message!

Thank you everyone for their input. This really is a tough decision. Husband is all for it and I was 50/50, but after sleeping on it I think it’s best for us to do genetic testing since we’ve had a miscarriage and 3 failed iuis, I feel like it’ll give us the answers as to why we can’t get pregnant naturally and reduce the risk of complications. Before I started IVF I knew that I wanted to do genetic testing already. I did 3 failed IUIs and my RE assumed it’s egg quality problems. Here’s my PGS result. These aneuploid are fatal and naturally my body will reject these embryos if they were implanted. If I didn’t do PGS they might implant the best looking embryos but they’re abnormals (turned out my normal embryos only grade BB and BC) and I would have failed IVF or miscarriage probably 2-3 times. I checked online these missing chromosomes are not likely to survive even if they survive there will be no quality of life.

We are doing genetic testing for the sole purpose of the majority of miscarriages are caused by chromosomal abnormalities. We are definitely NOT doing it because we wouldn’t love/want a child who had a chromosomal issue. I do not want to go through the process and transfer an embryo that is likely to to miscarry because of chromosomal abnormalities. IVF is SO expensive, and I don’t think I could handle the heartbreak of a miscarriage. However, it doesn’t guarantee that the embryo will stick :( I’m only 26 and my doctor recommends it for all patients.

Do pgs testing, so your not wasting time transferring abnormal embryos.  I wish somebody would have told me this, I wasted a year.

Hi Danielle, with your age I don’t think the dr would recommend PGS plus in most cases is not even good for the embryo itself. My husband and I are 33 and 35 and we didn’t do PGS. Best of luck in your IVF journey🤗

I genetic testing for iui. my doctor recommend for me to do it first hubby was optional? still waiting on results. I haven't even started treatment yet. I was suppose to start this month but I needed an Mmr  boost vacaine. so now I gotta wait a whole month lol

Hi Danielle, we are in similar situations. My husband and I will both be 33 in July, TTC #1 for two years as of this month, with three failed IUIs. Our provider offered genetic testing as well. I have a few genetic disabilities in my family, including my brother. However, we decided that we aren’t going to do testing. We will love and cherish our child no matter what. There are a lot of pros and cons to testing and not testing and the two of you have to decide what is best for you. Best of luck! It is ONE of MANY challenging decisions we will have to make as we move through the IVF process. Baby dust!!
