Ultrasound questions

Today My husband and I went for my first appt (we are 8wks and 2 days). They did not do an Ultrasound or even try to hear a heartbeat.

In fact, the doctor told me that it’s too early to pick up a heartbeat. Obviously I was pretty upset, because I thought I was going to get to see my baby today.

When I asked about the ultrasound they said they don’t have the machine in the building. So they scheduled me for a month out and I was so devastated I went to my car and cried.

Eventually decided to call back and find out what the heck because why would you bring me back in 4 weeks to the same office if you don’t have a he machinery?

They ordered one for me at that point and I have to call a different office to schedule that and see some different I guess. Is this common? How often do they do ultrasounds? And what are we going to do at my appointments then? This is our first and I am super confused...any help would be great.
