Copper IUD/acne/weight??? Advice please!

Emily

So, I’ve heard stories about people getting the copper IUD and their acne getting worse, but I couldn’t find anything that specifically relates to me so any advice/input would be helpful!

I had acne throughout my late childhood and teenage years. Sometimes it would be a few really bad breakouts, and sometimes it would be a large section of tiny breakouts. But I suffered through acne from around age 12-now in varying degrees. (I’m 23 currently). I’ve also always been heavier but active and in shape. When I got on hormonal birth control pills (Gildess FE) in 2012 (I was 18) my acne cleared up immediately and I dropped about 45 pounds. However, after a few months my acne returned, but it was timed more around my cycle. I’d be mostly clear for most of the month and around the time of my period my acne would be embarrassingly bad. Around 2015 Gildess was recalled and I was put on a generic replacement, Blisovi FE. At this point I gained around 40 pounds and my acne got much worse. In 2017 I went vegetarian and began running, at which point I dropped about 15 pounds but I am stuck at this point. I have been thinner before and I think the “new” birth control has something to do with it. However, I got a new job in February and since then my skin has been clear almost consistently since then. I am actually clearest during my period (which is also the week I do not take any pills), and when I get back on the pill the following week, my skin breaks out slightly a few times during the month. I am still unable to break through the weight loss plateau, and I have noticed that my hair is very oily when I take the pills as opposed to it returning to its normal texture when I am off. I have an appointment at the beginning of June to get the copper IUD inserted because I feel like the root of most of my problems can be traced back to these hormonal pills. Any advice as far as weight loss/gain or acne with regards to getting off of the pill and getting a non-hormonal IUD? Thanks!!!
