What can I use to keep a door shut so a kid can’t get out

My two year old has figured out how to open our door and gets out to roam (and mess with stuff he shouldn’t) I tried nailing a piece of wood on my wall next to the door so I could put it on the door at night but he actually figured out by juggling the door back and forth it loosened the wood. Baby gates don’t work, he knows how to knock them down, I will be getting a swinging baby gate this weekend but just need something to keep him locked in at night temporarily. It’s starting to become a huge problem to the point that I’ve even stayed up a couple of nights even when he was sleep because I was scared once I went to sleep he would wake up and go get into things he shouldn’t, obviously I can’t do that every single night because I can’t run on no sleep. He was on a sleeping schedule and everything he’s just recently in the past month started doing this and it has just gotten way too difficult to put up with.
